EMDR Therapy for Chronic Pain
Take Part in Research
Are you living with ongoing pain that doctors can’t fully explain?
You are warmly invited to take part in a new UK research study exploring whether EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) can help reduce the distress and intensity of chronic pain.
This study is part of my PhD research in collaboration with the University of Chester and has been designed with the highest ethical standards. It offers the opportunity to try a psychological approach to pain management that may bring real relief.
About the Study
What is it? – A programme of online EMDR therapy sessions, delivered one-to-one with a qualified and accredited EMDR therapist.
Who is it for? – Adults aged 18–65 in the UK who have experienced pain for more than 6 months where no clear medical cause has been found (sometimes called chronic primary pain or medically unexplained pain).
Why EMDR? – EMDR is best known for treating trauma, but research suggests it may also help with persistent physical symptoms, especially when pain is linked to stress or difficult life experiences. This study aims to find out whether EMDR can be effective for chronic pain when delivered online.
What’s Involved
An initial screening to check eligibility.
Around 6–12 sessions of EMDR therapy online (each 90 minutes).
Questionnaires before and after therapy to measure changes in pain, mood, and quality of life.
A follow-up conversation to hear about your experience.
Participation is completely voluntary, and you can withdraw at any time.
Potential Benefits
The chance to try a therapy that may reduce pain intensity or frequency.
Support to explore the links between stress, emotions, and your pain in a safe and structured way.
Contributing to important research that could help others living with chronic pain in the future.
Safeguards & Confidentiality
This project has been designed to meet strict ethical standards. Your sessions will be confidential, and all personal details will be stored securely. Taking part will not affect any NHS care or other treatments you are receiving.
